Total Security can help you identify potential security measures you may be overlooking in your home.

Here are some winter security tips for keeping your home safe during the colder months:

  • Maintain the Appearance of Your Home. This is important especially in New York and New Jersey because an unmaintained home may signal to a would-be burglar that the residents of your home may be “snowbirds” and that you may have left your home empty for a few months. Some signs burglars look for include unshoveled driveways and walkways, piled up newspapers or mail and a lack of activity in your home. If you are a snowbird, and leave your home unoccupied for the winter, or are planning to go on vacation it’s a good idea to have come and collect your mail or newspapers for you and to hire someone to clear your driveway when it snows.
  • Install Smart Lights. A lack of lights on in and outside your home is another indication that your home isn’t being used for an extended period of time. To solve this issue, you can use smart lights or set timers to have a porch light, as well as a light near the front of your home turn on for a few hours each evening.  With a smart light, you can turn lights on and off through your phone making this even easier. Another good idea is to have motion sensor lights installed outside your home so if someone approaches your home the lights will automatically turn on.
  • Lock Up. This may seem like the most obvious thing to do, but it’s important enough to mention since most burglars enter homes through unlocked windows and doors. Before you go away for the season or for a vacation be sure to double check that your home is locked up tight.
  • Install an Alarm System. Home security isn’t complete without a home security system. This way, in the event a break-in occurs the authorities will be notified immediately. Additionally, homes with an alarm system are less likely to be broken into than homes without one.

Taking a few extra home security tips in the winter time can be the difference between whether you are the victim of a burglary or not. Before you go away on vacation or head to a warmer state for the winter be sure you’ve done everything on this checklist so you can rest assured that your home and belongings will remain safe.  If you don’t already have a home security system installed, contact us today.
