How To Prevent Shoplifters in Nassau County
As a business owner, you work hard for your money. Do you own a business in Nassau County? Do you consider your employees trustworthy? How about the people that shop in your store? If you think that nobody could possibly be stealing from you, the statistics may surprise you.
The 25th Annual Retail Theft Survey by Jack L. Hayes International Wesley International, a loss prevention and inventory shrinkage control consultation is a survey that includes 23 retail companies, 18,900 different stores and more than $596 billion. The businesses included were a variety of stores including grocery stores, delis, bakeries, retail stores, among others.
What the survey revealed was staggering. The survey revealed that one of every 40 employees is apprehended for stealing. The occurrences of shoplifting increased 7.4% while the value of the items increased 22%. This was proceeding similar statistics from the previous year.
It was the 16th consecutive year in which the value of items or money stolen has increased. In addition, every $1 that is recovered, $25 is lost due to retail theft.
And now the 189 million dollar question, what can you possibly do to prevent dishonest employees and shoplifters from stealing from your business?
Well for starters:
1. Install a security camera system. You can’t always be the eyes of your business. You have a family, you have to sleep, there are other things you need to do other than watch over your business. However, business security cameras can be your eyes when you’re not around. A security camera is the perfect device to watch over your business and be able to catch a thief in the act OR EVEN STOP A THIEF!
2. Be unpredictable. If you develop a routine, customers or workers know where you are at a given time. Without that predictability, they won’t know if you will be around to catch them in the act so they are less likely to steal from you.
3. Be more aware of your workers. You should know where they are at all times. You should know when they arrive, when they leave, you should know their schedule as well as what they do.
In addition, prioritize and keep an eye on your most valuable items and know how many you have. You obviously don’t want any items being stolen, but if candy that costs about a dollar each is getting stolen, it’s better than items that are exponentially more expensive.
